Study Permit

A study permit is an official document which is issued by IRCC to authorize non-Canadian citizens to study in Canada. The regional government approves designated learning institutions to allow international students to study internationally. This allows students to study internationally and chase their academic initiatives. However, a study permit cannot be used as a travel document.

Who needs a Study Permit?

A study permit is required for most foreign nationals who want to study in Canada for longer than a period of six months. To require a study permit, you must be studying at a designated learning institution. Minor children also need a study permit, even if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Who is exempt from a Study Permit?

Some people take shorter terms which are less than 6 months, which means that they will not need any study permit. In addition to this, family members of foreign diplomats also do not require study permit. Preschool and kindergarten kids are another exception. If someone is a member of an armed force on official duty, then they are exempted from a study permit. Lastly, registered Indians and temporary residents/seekers of asylum will also not be needing a study permit. Overall, only people with an exceptional status or short time will not require it.

How to apply for a Study Permit?

You must apply for a Study Permit before you come to Canada. However, some candidates are allowed to apply from within Canada. You must know which option is more suitable for you.

When you submit your application, you must include:

  • Letter of acceptance from your designated learning institution
  • Provincial attestation letter (PAL)
  • Valid Passport (If required, depends on country)
  • Proof of funds so that you can support your education
  • Recent passport size photographs
  • Civil Status
  • Marriage certificate or statutory declaration
  • Medical examination (If required)
  • Language proficiency test (If required)
  • Ensure all documents are legal and translated in English, if originally in different language

What happens after applying for a Study Permit?

After completing your application, you must submit it online. When you finish this, you will receive a confirmation receipt.

There are additional things which may apply to you:

  • Biometrics: Biometric which are fingertips and a photo. You need to give biometrics every 10 years.
  • Medical Examination: If you plan on staying for more than six months.

What to do when preparing for arrival?

You should give yourself a reasonable amount of time to help you prepare before you can start studying in Canada.

Can I work with a Study Permit?

Students are allowed to work part-time jobs. However, you must check the restriction on your permit as not all people have this exceptional case for their Study Permit.

What are the conditions that you need to meet while on a Study Permit?

You must be on DLI and maintain full or part-time enrollment in each semester of your studies. You may also have to obey some specific conditions which apply to you regarding leave lengths. Lastly, you must make effort, and make progress towards your goals, following all conditions which are on your current Study Permit.

Study Permit Extensions:

For an extension you need to apply online. Remember to always apply early and to check your details, making sure that you have all the required documents and accurate information.
